Words of Encouragement

By Clarisse, P6Improved with AI

Mia had always struggled with running. She was a petite girl with a cascade of chestnut hair and a pair of bright, hopeful eyes. Yet, on the track, she was always the last to cross the finish line. Her classmates, a boisterous group of twelve-year-olds, would often jeer, "Mia, you loser! You'll never win a medal, just give up!" Their words were like sharp arrows, piercing her heart as she walked past, her head bowed to hide the tears that threatened to spill.

But Evelyn was different. With her warm smile and encouraging words, she was Mia's beacon of hope. Evelyn, a tall girl with a confident stride and a heart full of kindness, would often say, "Keep at it, Mia, you're getting stronger," her voice echoing across the empty tracks. Or she would gently remind her, "Don't let them decide what you can do." Evelyn's words were like an anchor in the storm, never letting Mia feel alone.

As the final competition loomed, the most important one of the year, Mia braced herself for the familiar sting of disappointment, certain she would finish last yet again. Evelyn, however, knew how much Mia loved running. She pleaded with Mia not to give up, to compete one more time. So, every day, Mia returned to the track, Evelyn by her side, running the same 200 metres over and over. Evelyn's shouts of "Come on, Mia, almost there!" were a constant reminder that she was not alone.

On the day of the race, the sun shone brightly over the stadium, casting long shadows on the track. Mia's hands trembled as she tied her shoelaces. Evelyn walked over, her smile as radiant as ever. "You've worked hard for this, Mia. Great oaks grow from small acorns. Trust yourself, run your race," she said, her words echoing in Mia's head like a melody as she walked back to the stands.

"Go!" The referee's voice sliced through the air like a knife. The burn in Mia's legs spread with each stride, the wind whipping against her face, sharp and cold. The roar of the crowd rose and fell like waves, but it all melted away into a final buzz in the back of her mind. The gritty red track scraped beneath her shoes, each step a reminder of how far she had come.

Mia stumbled, her breathing uneven, sweat trickling down her face like a miniature waterfall. She was so tired. "Go, Mia! I believe in you!" A voice, louder than the rest, made Mia keep running. It was Evelyn.

The finish line drew closer. Mia's vision blurred, her chest ached, but she leaned forward, heart hammering, and then she crossed the finish line. Bronze.

Mia stood on the podium, the bronze trophy heavy in her hands, her body trembling from the race. Her eyes darted around until they met Evelyn's. Evelyn grinned and shot her a thumbs-up, mouthing, "Good job!"

"She really did it," her classmates murmured amongst themselves in disbelief. "How could someone win after losing so many times?"

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Words of encouragement may seem small, but they plant seeds of strength. Evelyn's voice had carried Mia forward, and now her classmates saw what a single steady hand could do. Sometimes even a simple "you can do this" can change a person, just like a drop of colour in a dull black universe.

Mia lifted her chin, the same chin she once kept lowered to hide her tears. Now, she met her classmates' eyes without flinching. "Somebody told me I could do it, instead of telling me to give up." The bronze trophy she clutched gleamed, but it was her confidence, built from words that encouraged her to keep going, that shone brighter, proving she had outrun their words.
