Greater Emphasis on Oral Skills

The PSLE 2025 English exam now places more importance on the Oral component, increasing its weight to 40 marks from the previous 30. This change highlights the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) commitment to fostering strong verbal communication skills.

Students will be evaluated not only on their speech clarity but also on their ability to engage in practical communication situations. The assessment is divided into:

  • Reading Aloud (15 marks): This section assesses students' fluency and expressiveness, focusing on pronunciation and intonation.
  • Stimulus-Based Conversation (25 marks): Here, students converse based on a given prompt, showcasing their ability to respond appropriately, think critically, and express their thoughts clearly.

Strategies for Oral Excellence

To excel in the updated PSLE 2025 English Oral component, students should concentrate on two primary areas: reading aloud and stimulus-based conversation.

Reading Aloud: Students should practice reading with fluency, expression, and correct pronunciation. Regular practice with a variety of texts, including storybooks, news articles, and speeches, can enhance their skills.

Understanding PACT—Purpose, Audience, Context, and Tone—is crucial. For instance, if delivering a persuasive speech to encourage school-wide recycling, the purpose is to promote recycling, the audience is the entire school, the context is formal, and the tone should be persuasive.

Stimulus-Based Conversation: Improving skills in this area involves practicing appropriate responses, critical thinking, and clear expression. Parents can support this by having meaningful discussions with their children on various topics, encouraging them to articulate their opinions and provide reasoning. Exposing children to different stimuli, such as articles, videos, or podcasts, and discussing them together can also enhance their critical thinking and communication abilities.

Composition & Situational Writing Adjustments

Composition (36 marks): The Continuous Writing component now weighs 36 marks, down from 40, focusing on creativity, coherence, and grammatical precision. Students should write at least 150 words on a given topic.

Situational Writing (14 marks): This section now carries 14 marks instead of 15. A new requirement to address a bulleted key content point encourages students to offer original ideas, assessing their creativity and practical application of knowledge.

Changes in Paper 2 Components

The PSLE 2025 English exam has adjusted the weightage of Paper 2 to 90 marks from the previous 95.

Changes include:

  • Visual Text Comprehension: Reduced from 8 to 5 marks.
  • Editing for Spelling and Grammar: Reduced from 12 to 10 marks.

These changes reallocate 10 marks to Paper 4, emphasizing oral skills and balancing the exam structure to highlight critical thinking and inferential abilities.

Maintaining Listening Comprehension

The Listening Comprehension (LC) component remains at 20 marks. Students must not only understand spoken language but also exhibit critical listening skills, aligning with broader language education goals.

Effective Preparation Strategies

To tackle the new PSLE 2025 English syllabus, students should:

  1. Engage in Regular Practice: Participate in discussions, presentations, and debates to enhance fluency, pronunciation, and articulation.
  2. Expose to Diverse Materials: Listen to various spoken materials to broaden comprehension and improve response effectiveness.
  3. Focus on Comprehension Skills: Develop thorough reading and critical listening skills to understand and interpret spoken language.
  4. Holistic Preparation: Cover all components of Paper 2, including open-ended comprehension, cloze passages, vocabulary, and grammar.
